The three parts that follow explain how to measure, make, and enhance patio bench cushions. Continue reading to find out more.

Section 1: Bench Cushion Measurement

In the next stages, a measuring tape or yardstick will be quite useful.

Take measurements of the length and breadth of your existing bench first.

Many manufacturers make cushions in 1/2-inch increments, so if you’re in the middle, round up or down to the next half-inch. Feel free to measure the cushion instead of the bench if you have an old cushion that needs to be replaced.

Next, decide on the thickness of your new patio bench cushion by measuring the old one or eyeballing the necessary thickness on the bench surface in 1-inch increments.

Remember to subtract the thickness of the seat cushion from the width of the back cushion to get an accurate measurement if you’re utilizing both seat and back bench cushions.

Making Your Own Bench Cushions (Section 2)

Pieces of foam are put inside a weather-resistant cloth shell to create bench cushions.

To begin, you’ll need a piece of foam that’s the right consistency and thickness.

It must then be trimmed into a rectangular form that fits the bench seat profile (you can use the measurements you found in Section 1). Allow a little additional room for the fabric’s thickness, particularly at the seams.

To make raised edges, you’ll need to utilize cording, which is a thin tube in which the cloth is wound around.

Wrap the bench cloth around a piece of cord and glue it in place.

Before everything is sewed together, the cable has to be sewn onto the edges of the cloth rectangles.

After you’ve laid out all of your parts, you can start sewing them together. Sew from the inside out, leaving a hole for the foam at the end.

Sew the end together to create the bench cushion.

Section 3: Cushion Slippage Prevention

You may use non-slip material glued to the bottom of the cushion or simply put on the bench surface to keep your bench cushions from sliding around, particularly on wooden benches.

This material is meant to grip surfaces and prevent slippage and is used in cabinets and drawers.

When making a cushion from scratch, the bottom might get permanently adhered to the cushion. This material may be seen on many store-bought pillows.
