John Deere 420In the industry, the John Deere 420 tractor is regarded as a jack of all crafts.

It was made in a variety of configurations to suit various tasks.

General-Purpose, Hi-Crop, Standard, Utility, Special, and Crawler configurations were available.

As if that wasn’t remarkable enough, each configuration comes with a variety of wheel options.

The 420 was manufactured between 1956 and 1958 and came with one of three engines. Except for the color change, the 420 replaced the 40 with almost the same appearance ( now green AND yellow).

Some of the older versions, however, were painted entirely in green, so double-check the serial plate to be sure. In 1958, 55,000 of these versions were produced and sold for $2300 each.

The steering shaft on most John Deere 420s is straight, while some later versions feature a tilted one.

The engine has vertical cylinders and is arranged in a “inline” configuration. Due to its position, it lacks a belt pulley and flywheel on the side, despite being a two-cylinder. Fixed width front ends were offered on the Standard and Utility variants.

The “rowcrop” type included a tricycle wheel design with one or two wheels, as well as a front end that could be adjusted in width. A high variant called as the “highcrop” was also available.

The type 420c, which uses tracks instead of wheels, was perhaps the most odd of the variants.

Engine:

One of three 2-cylinder engines powers the John Deere 420. There were three distinct engines to choose from, each with varying fuel capacities. One operated only on gasoline, another on LP gas, and still another on all-fuel. All of them were liquid cooled and clocked in at 1850 RPM. With a firing sequence of 1-2, the displacement was 113ci. The gasoline and all-fuel tractors had a fuel tank capacity of 10,5 gallons, while the LP variant had a much larger capacity of 20 gallons.

Power:

In 1956, the John Deere 420 was put to the test to verify John Deere’s promises of power. The drawbar was rated at 20.31 horsepower, while the belt was rated at 24.83 horsepower. The drawbar produced 27.08 horsepower, while the belt produced 29.21 horsepower.

Transmission:

Except for the 5-speed, which clocks in at 540 RPM, all versions came equipped with rear power take-off. On the 5-speed, PTO was an option.

There were four forward speeds and one backward speed available.

Weight:

3250 pound sterling
