The main purpose for erecting a fence around a garden is to keep animals out. Garden fences are beneficial to those who live on the outskirts of the forests or in rural areas.

Fencing Materials Required:

Garden Fence Materials and Design TipsThe “gauge” of metal fence determines its thickness. The narrower the wires are, the greater the gauge. Low-gauge fence is excellent for keeping big animals out, such as bears. Plastic (nylon) fence is also available, although it is intended for less demanding applications.

  • Chain Link Fence: Chain link fencing is constructed of steel and is very durable. It’s available in rolls and prefabricated portions. It stands between 4 and 6 feet tall.
  • Chicken Wire Fence: This sort of fencing may be used for a lot more than just keeping hens in one place. It may also be used to keep small animals such as dogs and rabbits under control. It’s light, simple to use, and cost-effective.
  • Welded wire fences are very durable and can keep even the biggest animals away. Few animals can get around the fence when it is supported by robust timber posts. For maximum strength, the large gauge wires are soldered together. This 14 gauge fence is available in both plain and vinyl coated versions.
  • Rabbit Guard Fencing: Rabbit guard fencing is available in a variety of styles and makes a great garden fence. The bottom of this fence has a dense grid, while the top has a narrower grid. It is quite tough for ground creatures to get through it. It’s made of 16 gauge steel.
  • Electric fences: An electric fence may help keep hungry animals away from your crops. These low-profile fences are comprised of an electrically charged long metal wire. When animals are handled, they experience a mild but significant jolt, which deters them.
  • Wireless Garden Fences: If you have a pet, these garden fences will work. The fence is constructed by placing multiple electronic transmitters around the garden to form an invisible barrier. Your pet (most likely a dog) wears an electric collar that shocks them if they breach the invisible boundary.
  • Hex Netting: Hex netting is a light-duty, low-cost fence made of galvanized wire. The 1 and 2 inch mesh sizes are great for keeping tiny animals out. The gauge of the wire is 20.

Designing a Garden Fence

  • Use robust corner posts, ideally with square measurements of 33″ or 44″ in length. For the strongest fence, set the posts at a 3-foot depth.
  • To assure rot and insect resistance, use treated timber.
  • If you want metal posts, look for ones with tabs on the sides. These tabs aid in the attachment of the fence to the posts. To fasten the fence to the posts, always use galvanized wire.
